Pyongyang: North Korea's second nuclear test was carried out successfully in a safe manner and has helped solve technical problems for developing its nuclear weapons technology, the official Korean Central News Agency said Monday.
The KCNA report, which came out around noon local time, said the underground test took place on Monday but did not mention the exact time of the experiment or the test site.
"The Democratic People's Republic of Korea successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self defense in every way," the report said.
The test was "safely conducted" and the results of the test "helped satisfactorily settle the scientific and technological problems arising in further increasing the power of nuclear weapons," it said.
North Korea carried out its first nuclear test in October 2006 and faced criticism from the international community.
"The test will contribute to defending the sovereignty of the country and the nation and socialism and ensuring peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and the region around it," the report said.
