Dimapur: The situation in Dimapur city of Nagaland is slowly returning to normalcy, three days after a 35-year-old rape accused was dragged out of Dimapur Central Jail by a mob of thousands, lynched and then hanged from a clock tower.
The curfew has been lifted till 3 PM but mobile, Internet and SMS services have been blocked for the next 48 hours in Dimapur.
The last rites of rape accused Syed Farid Khan will be held on Sunday in his hometown of Karimganj in Assam. His family alleged that he was framed and demands justice.
Besides prohibitory orders, the administration has deployed 11 companies of India Reserve Battalion and three companies of Central Reserved Police Force to maintain law and order.
Vehicles were seen plying in depleted numbers and people were seen on the streets. However, as a preemptive measure, major commercial establishments remained shut, police said.
Protesting against the incident, truckers from Assam have stopped plying to Nagaland. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also blamed the central security forces for failing to curb the mob.
Meanwhile, six people have been held and more arrests are likely as the authorities scan through images and videos of the incident.
Nagaland IGP Wabang Jamir said, "We are getting images and videos from social media. There was no conspiracy angle."
