CHENNAI: DMK parliament leader TR Baalu urged Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to take up Lankan issue for discussion in the Budget Session of Parliament, during the all-party meeting held on Monday.
According to a release, Baalu recalled the notice given to Parliament for a short duration discussion on the human rights excess during the final stages of the Lankan civil war in 2009.
He also reiterated that India should support the resolution moved against Lanka at United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to launch an independent investigation on allegation of war crimes.
Baalu insisted that the ongoing attacks on Indian fishermen in the India-Sri Lankan waters and their fishing rights off coast of Katchatheevu to be raised. He sought highest priority for interstate water disputes of the State with Kerala in Mullaiperiyar and with Karnataka in Cauvery in the discussion.
“Issues of federalism and State autonomy pertaining to law making must also be discussed in full earnest, as these are the fundamentals underpinning our nation’s constitutional structure”, he noted.
