RAMANATHAPURAM: The third unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) squadron of the Indian Navy was commissioned in the naval air station in Ramanathapuram district on Wednesday. After commissioning the squadron at Uchipuli naval air station, Vice-admiral Anil Chopra-AVSM, flag officer commanding-in-chief of the Eastern Naval command, said the commissioning of the UAV squadron will add value to the surveillance capability and augment the efforts of enhancing coastal security.He said the UAV will be beneficial during the implementation of the Sethusamudram ship channel project as it will be used to monitor the Eastern region. A naval officer told Express that the UAVs were imported from Israel and can travel up to speeds of 350 miles per hour. The UAV squadron will boost naval operations in the area.
