The School of Optometry of the Regional Institute of Optometry (RIO), GOH (Egmore Eye Hospital), conducted its golden jubilee celebrations recently. Chief guests Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy and MP N Balaganga, inaugurated the event.
Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Duraisamy explained that the importance of any object became apparent only during its absence. “We witnessed this during the acute water shortage in Chennai not too long ago,” he said. He further underlined the importance of health to humans. “It is imperative that we realise this soon. Only then can we scale newer heights of progress,” the Mayor said.
To drive home his point, he said that some of India’s greatest achievers died at a very young age. “Srinivasa Ramanujam died at 32; poet Kavignar Kannadasan also died at a very early age. Same is the case with Annadurai, who died young due to cancer,” he listed before he went on to add, “Had they lived for a longer period, the human race would have benefited greatly.”
Duraiswamy urged doctors to conduct research to ensure a healthy society by the year 2020.
The Mayor also unveiled a plaque, commemorating the occasion. The entire campus wore a festive look, with stalls providing information about various eye ailments lining the area.
Institute director K Vasantha was among those present on the occasion.
