Encephalitis under control, claims Bengal Health Department
The toll has now gone up to 112 since January this year.

Kolkata: The West Bengal Health Department on Tuesday said that the spread of encephalitis was "completely under control" as hardly any new case of the vector-borne disease was reported.

"The situation is totally under our control now. The number of new cases has reduced drastically and there are hardly any new confirmed cases of encephalitis coming up before us," West Bengal Health Services director Biswaranjan Satpathy, who is camping in the affected areas of north Bengal, said.

However, one patient who was fighting for life since the last few days at the North Bengal Medical College passed away on Tuesday, he said.

The toll has now gone up to 112 since January this year. Satpathy said all fever cases reported are being screened for encephalitis but they are turning out to be viral infections.

Ever since an outbreak of the disease was reported from the seven affected districts of north Bengal earlier in the month, municipalities and other local bodies have taken up a massive cleanliness drive and undertaken fogging activities regularly to control the spread of disease.
