PUDUCHERRY: Officials of the National Highways Division and Traffic Police cleared the temporary structures erected by pavement dwellers on 100-feet road in Ellapillaichavady, near the Rajiv Gandhi Government Women and Children Hospital on Saturday. Pavement dwellers built temporary sheds on the road after the hospital was shifted to its new premises, officials said and added that these sheds later functioned as shops. The promise of brisk business in the area prompted a  manifold rise in the number of temporary sheds in the past few days, causing hindrance to the free movement of traffic and pedestrians. The traffic police are yet to streamline traffic plans for the area. The lack of traffic rules in the junction poses a danger to pregnant mothers who visit the hospital frequently.Chief Minister Rangasamy had emphasised on the need for reducing traffic congestion in  the town after he assumed office. CM’s All India Namathu Rajyam Congress party office is situated near the hospital. Despite the eviction, the pavement dwellers are expected to be back if the past experience is anything to go by.
