The clearing operation, supervised by top officials, began on Saturday early morning amid protests by shop owners.Hundreds of encroachments on Dhanushkodi Road which had come up on government land, were also removed.
Officials claimed they acted as repeated warnings and notice given to encroachers to vacate did not yield any result. With thousands of pilgrims visiting the temple town every day,the roads had to be kept clear for free flow of traffic, they said.
