MADURAI: The Madurai Corporation on Tuesday removed encroachments here alleged to be the handiwork of former deputy Mayor ‘Misa’ M Pandian. The drive took place at Sundarajapuram market under Ward No. 41 of the Madurai Corporation, following instructions from Madurai Corporation Commissioner S Natarajan, who took charge recently.  A team of officials, led by chief town planning officer P Murugesan and assistant executive engineer A Pazhanisamy, visited the spot and conducted inquiries with the persons concerned.Pandian, who was the deputy mayor of the Madurai Corporation during the DMK regime in 2001, had allegedly occupied the Corporation-owned community hall. He had also encroached upon the open space nearby and constructed five shops and rented them out. A workshop, saw mill, charcoal manufacturing unit, seat cover lining unit and a hotel were being run there.  The community hall, meant for public use at a nominal charge, was used by Pandian as a godown for storing vessels. An office for his business was also located in the hall. The person concerned had reportedly been running the shops for the last 10 years with political patronage. As Corporation officials in the past had failed to remove the encroachments, they would be liable for disciplinary action, said a senior official in the Corporation.Stringent action would be taken against the accused,  assured Natarajan.
