New Delhi: This is embarrassing. Several reports suggest that a group of delirious 'fans' were hired to cheer for Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, who is on a promotional spree for the fourth installment of the 'Mission Impossible' series in India.
Implausible as it may sound that the star, a pin-up for millions of women around the world, would fail to draw a group of fans on touching base in India, but the Internet was buzzing on Wednesday with reports that that may have been the case.
Several prominent newspapers reported that a group of 200 fans were hired for Rs 300 each to cheer for the actor when he landed in India. On Twitter Rs 300 soon became a trending topic with users sharing jokes over the reported incident.
Cruise was seen posing at the Mumbai airport for photographs with fans waving banners. The trend is common for pulling crowds at political rallies. However, the Times of India daily reported that an official from Wizcraft, the company organizing Tom Cruise's India trip, denied any knowledge of a 'paid' arrangement. The news daily quoted Sabah Joseph, one of the directors of the company, as saying: "We are not aware of this. Your information is incorrect."
Cruise stayed at the Taj Mahal Hotel, which was one of the sites of 26/11 terror attacks. Actor Anil Kapoor who also stars in the film, hosted a party for him during his stay here.
