New Delhi: Standing in solidarity with the doctors of Maharashtra, resident doctors at All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi are protesting in a unique fashion - wearing helmets to work.
This “SavetheSaviours” campaign, led by around 1,500 resident doctors, is to demand a safe working environment for all doctors across the country.
“This is a signal to the government. We are scared and insecure, so we want to protect ourselves” says Doctor Harjeet Singh.
The Resident Doctors Association has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to draw attention to the recent spate of violence against doctors in Maharashtra.
“The PM has appointed ‘gao rakshaks’ in the country… what about the protection of the doctors,” adds Vijay Gurjar, president of the resident doctors’ association at AIIMS.
The genesis of the issue lies in the attacks doctors have had to face at the hands of the disgruntled relatives of patients. Even as the strike was on, a lady doctor in a hospital in Sion was attacked on Thursday, whereas a doctor in Dhule government hospital was attacked by relatives of a patient, and blinded in one eye.
Putting out a message, a group of resident doctors' association at AIIMS say that only a doctor can understand how painful it is when "we are beaten up for the non-availability" of beds in ICU… and non-availability of super-specialties in your hospital.
“Having a doctor as our health minister will be good for patients,” the message said, adding that he would have sympathy for them unlike the judges, who are struggling to give a written document to the resident doctors, leading to such a huge health crisis all over India.
