THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The city-based Banner Film Society is holding a one-day film festival on May 29. The theme of the festival is ‘Best Foreign Language Films in Oscar’. The venue is Lenin Balavadi, behind Tagore Hall. The festival starts off with the film, ‘In a Better World’, a 2010 drama film directed by Susanne Bier and written by Anders Thomas Jensen. It stars Mikael Persbrandt, Trine Dyrholm and Ulrich Thomsen in a story which takes place in small-town Denmark and a refugee camp in Africa. The film was a Danish majority production with co-producers in Sweden. It won the 2011 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards.Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film of 2008, ‘Departures’, is a delightful and sensitive journey into the heartland of Japan and an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of Japan’s cultural heritage.A premiere symphony orchestra in Tokyo disbands, leaving Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) suddenly unemployed. Suffering from an innate sense that he is a mediocre musician, he faces up to the fact that not everyone who has devoted their life to music can become a top artist. With wife Mika (Ryoko Hirosue) in tow, he moves back to his home town in the northeastern prefecture of Yamagata. They move into the crumbling remains of his mother’s house, which doubled as the local pub.The third film at the fest is a riveting Argentine thriller spiked with witty dialogue and poignant love stories, ‘The Secret in Their Eyes’  interweaves the personal lives of a team of state prosecutors with a manhunt spanning 25 years. Director Juan Jose Campanella (Same Love, Same Rain’, ‘Son of the Bride’) is one of Argentina’s most communicative storytellers. Based on the profoundly moving true story that captured the world’s attention, ‘The Sea Inside’ is about Spaniard Ramón Sampedro, who fought a 30-year campaign to win the right to end his life with dignity. ‘The Sea Inside’ is the story of Ramón’s relationships with two women: Julia (Belén Rueda), a lawyer who supports his cause, and Rosa (Lola Dueñas), a local woman who wants to convince him that life is worth living. Through the gift of his love, these two women are inspired to accomplish things they never previously thought possible.Despite his wish to die, Ramón taught everyone he encountered the meaning, value and preciousness of life. Though he could not move himself, he had an uncanny ability to move others. A truly joyous experience, ‘The Sea Inside’ celebrates the nature of freedom and love, and the mystery and beauty of life.
