Unlike several of his compatriots, designer Narendra Kumar has decided against having any Bollywood showstopper for his latest collection that he is all set to show at the Lakme Fashion Week. That comes as a surprise since this particular collection is inspired by the women of Mumbai. Nari, as he is affectionately called, admits that Bollywood actors like Bipasha Basu, Kangana Ranaut and Priyanka Chopra fit into the very definition of what his clothes stand for – for the smart, thinking woman.
He says, “There is no other city in the world that means so much to women. You could be anybody in Mumbai. You don’t need a godfather. A woman in Mumbai is strong, driven, resilient and ambitious. Just like New York, in Mumbai you have the freedom to be yourself.”
Ask him which Bollywood beauties he would love to drape in his creations and he points out, “It has to be Bipasha, Priyanka and Kangana.” Interestingly, all of these women came from outside Mumbai and now call the city their home. He adds, “My clothes are kind of directed towards the confident woman, like a breath of fresh air.” Nari is also happy that several Bollywood films today are inspiring fashion trends in the retail market. He says, “I think it is great. Anything that generates interest in fashion is great. After all, they provide credibility to fashion designers.”
But, why would he then shy away from inviting any Bollywood beauty to walk the ramp for him? In the past, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut have walked the ramp sporting his designs. He explains, “My clothes are unique and strong enough. I don’t need showstoppers this time.”
