VELLORE: The Pernambut Consumer Welfare Protection Council has appealed to the chief minister to establish a new taluk with headquarters at Pernambut by carving out villages in and around Pernambut town from Ambur and Gudiyattam taluks. In a memorandum submitted to chief minister Jayalalithaa, council president T Basheeruddin pointed out that for the past 60 years, basic amenities and infrastructure facilities in Pernambut had not improved putting people of the leather town through untold miseries. Being an important town bordering Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, it required better administration, infrastructure, security cover and all amenities for the residents. These could be achieved once the town received the taluk status.Basheeruddin underlined the need for converting the Ambur-Sadgar Road (linking Chennai-Bangalore and Thiruvalam-V Kotta national highways) to a state highway. Welcoming the announcement of Transport Minister Senthil Balaji that state transportation would have a new division at Vellore, Basheeruddin urged the department to shift the Pernambut transport depot to its own premises from a rented building. He also urged the minister to introduce new express bus services between Chennai and Bangalore via Pernambut and more mofussil bus services between Pernambut, Ambur and Gudiyattam. Expressing concern over water scarcity, Basheeruddin said the district administration should implement new water schemes for Pernambut on a war footing. The water sump at the Madanapalli water works had caved in affecting water supply to Pernambut, he added.
