SRINAGAR: The Guru house in Baramulla is ecstatic. Ghalib Guru, the son of Afzal Guru, the executed convict of 2001 Parliament attack, is making rapid strides in his career. He is a step away from fulfilling his father's wish of becoming a cardiologist for which he has to clear an entrance test later this year.
That will be a wait of few more months, but as of now the family and friends are rejoicing his success.
Neighbours and relatives are walking up to Ghalib's maternal grandpa's home to greet them. Her mother Tabbasum is receiving congratulatory calls and media men stand in a queue to interview Ghalib.
Early this morning, Jammu and Kashmir State Board announced the results of 12th class and Ghalib passed, scoring 88 per cent.
Friends and relatives said today's success is a stepping stone for the target he has set for himself, and that is to become a cardiologist.
''Whenever I would meet my father in Tihar jail, he would tell me you will have to become a doctor. I really want to fulfil his wish,'' Ghalib had told News 18 in an interview.
While family seemed to enjoy his success, Ghalib was a bit disappointed.
"Biology and English have somewhat upset my grades. The marks in the two subjects are not to my satisfaction,'' Ghalib told media men.
Tabbasum who has been a great support to him in the thick and thin looked composed.
"Entire neighbourhood is here to congratulate Ghalib. Some are distributing sweets and almonds to express their affection. Ghalib is a bit down but friends will cheer him up,'' she said.
The 18-year-old was just two when Afzal Guru was arrested for attack on Parliament.
Guru had named him after famous Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib.
''Papa loved his poetry and during jail meetings, he would insist to hear few couplets from me. I have now memorised many.''
Afzal Guru, SAR Geelani, Showkat Guru and his wife Afshan Guru were charged with planning the attack on the Parliament on December 13, 2001.
The Supreme Court later upheld the death sentence of Afzal Guru but acquitted SAR Geelani and Afshan.
Showkat was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and released in 2011 while Guru was hanged and buried in Tihar jail on February 9, 2013.
After the apex court verdict, Afzal’s wife Tabasum and son Ghalib met former President APJ Abdul Kalam and sought pardon for him.
The mercy petition was rejected by former President Pranab Mukherjee before he was hanged.
Ghalib passed Class 12th exams only a month before his father's fifth death anniversary.
''I am missing him today as I always do when I need him the most,'' he said.
"I am preparing to crack the NEET and want to become a doctor.''
Some 60 miles away from Baramulla and in Tral, South Kashmir, Naveed Alam, brother of slain Hizbul commander Burhan Wani, too has cleared his class 12th. The celebrations here are muted. Naveed says he too wants to be a doctor.
