In a landmark decision, the Gujarat government on Friday allowed the consumption of alcohol within the premises of hotels, restaurants, and clubs offering “wine and dine” services in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) of the ‘dry’ state.
Gujarat excerises a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state.
According to an official notification, all employees and owners of businesses within the GIFT City complex will be eligible to obtain a liquor license.
GIFT City will also allow visitors of each company to consume liquor in hotels, restaurants, and clubs holding temporary permits, in the company of permanent employees from the same organisation.
The hotels, restaurants, and clubs in GIFT City can obtain the “wine and dine” permit through the FL3 licence, under which, employees and and authorised visitors can enjoy alcoholic beverages within these establishments. However, these outlets cannot sell liquor, the State government said in a release.
In the last decade, the Gujarat government has taken multiple steps to relax the prohibition of liquor in order to attract foreign investments. First came the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) which were exempted followed by permits given to licensed liquor shops in some hotels where only tourists could alcohol.
