MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday, ordered 17 persons, including Union Minister M K Alagiri, who were chargesheeted in the Melur Tahsildar attack case during the Assembly poll to surrender in the magistrate court and obtain bail.During the campaigning for the Assembly elections, Alagiri met party cadre at Valladikarar temple near Melur. Tahsildar Kalimuthu, who was on election duty, recorded the activities of Alagiri with the help of election videographer Kannan and it was alleged that the DMK men accompanying the Union Minister attacked the election officials.Kalimuthu filed a case with Keelavalavu police station in this regard. Based on the complaint, a case was filed against Alagiri, Deputy Mayor P M Mannan, Melur DMK union secretary Ragupathy and Tirugnanam. The chargesheet in this case was filed in the Melur Magistrate court last week and the police named 17 persons in the chargesheet.Under these circumstances, the 17 persons filed a petition in the Madurai Bench stating that they were not aware that they had been included in the chargesheet and that they had no connection in the case.This was the reason they had not appeared in magistrate court, they further stated in the petition and pleaded the court to cancel the arrest warrant issued against them. Justice R Mala, who heard the case, ordered the petitioners to surrender in the magistrate court and get bail.
