GYARAGHATTA (Tumkur): More than half a century ago, a school dropout was summoned by his teacher to make a promise. A promise to make the earth green.Today, 70-year-old Beerajja’s passion for trees is only growing. Proof of this lies in the 2 km stretch of the Tiptur- Arsikere Road, which is lined with about 100 banyan trees. When he decided to quit school, his teacher, Kaakanna Mestru of Halebid told him, “You are quitting school. At least plant trees,” and gave him a sapling.Tending to trees everyday, he has ensured 100 of the 200 saplings he planted grew into shade giving trees.Konehalli Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) official Paramashivaiah asked Beerajja to work at the centre, where he raised plants for two decades till 2009. However, he is yet to get the dues from KVK and his old age pension `400 per month has been pending for five months.But what pains him more is the mercury poisoning of three trees by miscreants.On Friday, as the monsoon set in, Beerajja was busy sowing seeds of a tree along the road.
