BANGALORE: The High Court on Monday directed the State Government to take a positive decision on the setting up of the special courts in the city to protect the children against offences as per Child Rights Act, by June 30.
Maya C P, a social worker, has filed a public interest litigation contending that there should be special courts to protect the children against whom various criminal offences are happening everyday across the state.According to the Commission for the Protection of the Child Rights Act, special courts for children along with special public prosecutors should be constituted. There are many children in the state who have suffered various criminal offences, but they do not know what to do and where to go, the petitioner argued.

Earlier, the High Court, on March 7, had directed the State Government to provide data regarding the complaints against criminal offences on children in the state in a case seeking the setting up of special courts to protect the children against those offences.

In Bangalore, from 2006 to till date, 908 cases have been registered. A total of 1,734 cases are pending since then in the state, including the cases in Bangalore, the government submitted to the court.

The bench directed the State Government to submit the details by June 30.
