HC slams Waqf Board over Jangpura Masjid issue
Delhi HC also pulled up political leaders but allowed offering of prayers at the site.

New Delhi: Days after the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) demolished a mosque in the capital, the Delhi high court has pulled up the Waqf Board and political leaders for instigating people.

Though it allowed prayers to be offered at the site, the court made it very clear that no construction work can take place till the next date of hearing.

People protested in Jangpura after the high court directed the DDA to demolish a mosque that was built illegally on DDA land. They insisted on offering prayers at the site in violation of the court order.

This prompted the RWA to file a contempt petition in court. They alleged that leaders like Sheila Dikshit and the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid were instigating the locals to encroach upon the site.

Over the weekend, even politicians arrived at the scene.

"Even though DDA has brought the mosque down, the land belongs to Allah and nothing can be done," said Amar Singh.

On Monday, the court pulled up Sheila Dikshit’s lawyer and the Waqf Board saying: "Don't leaders have a responsibility towards the common man? They ought to explain to them the rule of law. If you think that this is your land, then there are legal means to say so."

The court made it clear that no structure could come up at this site. But the Waqf Board and the DDA requested the court to allow a few people to offer namaz everyday.

The court upheld this argument and said that ten people can offer namaz five times a day. But at the same time said that there will be no construction at the site till the next two months.

Local leaders welcomed the verdict but said this is indeed Waqf property.

The masjid committee may even challenge the order in the Supreme Court before the next date of hearing in March.
