There is a striking similarity between Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa and her mentor and superstar MG Ramachandran's (MGR) life. Jayalalithaa and MGR acted together in 28 films, became chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and died under same circumstances. Here are the 10 ways in which history repeated itself in the case of both the leaders:
- Both of them dominated south Indian film industry and in the later phase of their life became popular AIADMK leaders.
- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was admitted to Chennai's Apollo Hospitals while her MG Ramachandran (MGR) was admitted to a private hospital in the city 32 years ago.
- They were suffering from breathlessness, had asthmatic trouble and underwent dialysis.
- MGR died on October 5, 1984. But information regarding his health was kept tightly guarded. In a similar manner, the medical bulletin released by Apollo Hospitals revealed little about Jayalalithaa's health status. She died on December 5, 2016.
- While doctors from the US and Japan were called in to treat MGR, London-based Dr. Richard Beale was involved in Jayalalithaa's treatment.
- People respected MGR a lot and his fans thronged the Chennai hospital where he underwent treatment. The same scene was repeated at Apollo Hospitals when Jayalalithaa was admitted there on September 22, 2016. Fans surrounded the hospital and prayed for her speedy recovery.
- Both Jayalalithaa and MGR were subjected to countless rumours and speculation since they were admitted to hospital for treatment.
- MGR and Jayalalithaa’s sudden illness took most of their Cabinet ministers by surprise and their cabinet ministers functioned out of hospitals.
- DMK President M Karunanidhi was the Opposition leader during both MGR and Jayalalithaa's tenure.
