Hi-tech gadgets to keep Delhi Metro stations clean
New housekeeping contracts for all Metro stations are being awarded, ensuring that the machinery, reagents, chemicals and housekeeping staff are mobilised.

New Delhi: Eco-friendly chemicals, hi-tech machines and bio-degradable garbage disposal bags will ensure cleanliness of Metro stations. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to re-work its cleaning and housekeeping practices by using advanced and hi-tech machineries and is conducting specialised training programme for its staff to ensure the entire system is clean and hygienic round-the-clock.

All the team leaders and supervisors of the cleaning teams deputed at stations, maintenance depots are now being trained and certified by the British Institute of Cleaning Sciences in Gurgaon for this purpose. An orientation programme and workshop will also be held for all station managers, train maintenance depot in-charges and officials from Operations Department to understand the working of these new equipment and techniques.

New housekeeping contracts for all Metro stations are being awarded, ensuring that the machinery, reagents, chemicals and housekeeping staff are mobilised. The DMRC will ensure mechanised cleaning operations by deploying new machinery, updating existing machinery and using new machines like electrically operated scrubber drier and back pack vacuum cleaners.

It will also make sure dust-free sweeping, cleaning operations are undertaken, bio-degradable garbage disposal bags are used in a hygienic manner and eco-friendly cleaning chemicals and reagents are used for cleaning operations. Presently, DMRC deploys around 3,500 housekeeping personnel at its 137 stations. On an average 20-25 persons are deployed per station to keep the stations clean. The overall cleaning and housekeeping activities of Delhi Metro costs around Rs 5 crore per month.
