Hyderabad: Police of Hyderabad arrested four people including an Anti Corruption Bureau home guard for looting cash from two businessmen after promising commission for exchanging demonetised currency with new notes.
Police have also seized Rs 12 lakh cash in new currency notes and four mobile phones from the accused.
On December 14, Venkanna and Mahesh, from Nalgonda district of Telangana, came to Hyderabad with Rs 12 lakh new currency notes.
One of the accused collected the new notes from them and asked them to wait till he returns with demonetised currency. But then businessmen received a phone call from a person impersonating as a police official and said that ACB has seized the cash. The victims then approached ACB office and filed a complaint.
In a separate case, police also arrested 6 people in dacoity case and seized Rs 5.70 lakh. The complainant informed police that he had gone to exchange currency at a commission but was threatened and looted.
In another incident, five people including a police officer were arrested in Medak district of Telangana for allegedly robbing a businessman of Rs 91 lakh on December 12th, in the name of exchanging old currency. The businessman was attacked by people claiming to be police and then robbed him. Police has seized over Rs 34 lakh in new notes.
Earlier also on December 5, Banjara hills police also arrested 10 people including additional inspector of police for robbing Rs 78 lakh in new Rs 2000 notes in four incidents in Hyderabad.
The Hyderabad police is continuously cautioning public not to fall in trap of gangs operating in exchange old demonetized or new currency for commission. Police is also appealing public to inform police or the Income Tax department.
