Hyderabad: 'Pearl City' Hyderabad hosts the World Telugu Conference (WTC) from December 15th -19th to promote the rich heritage and culture of Telugu language.
The event is being organised at a time when "language war" hits many South Indian states and efforts are on to safeguard and promote regional language, literature and culture.
The grand event will be inaugurated by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. During the five day conference, over 8,000 delegates from across the world will gather to discuss how to promote, enrich and preserve Telugu language. President Ramanath Kovind will be the chief guest at the Valedictory function of the conference.
Gearing up for the event, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up beautification of the city around LB Stadium which will be the main venue for the program. Major junctions, parks, roads, buildings across the city have been decorated with lights.
The walls in the city have been painted by artists that showcase Telangana's rich culture to the entire world. Colorful arches showcasing Telangana's history and culture have also been displayed across the city.
Special stalls would be set up to showcase the history of Telangana, its literature, food and handicrafts etc. There are also plans to screen documentaries on Telangana during the five day event. The delegates would also get a taste of authentic Telangana cuisine.
Apart from LB Stadium, cultural and literary events will also be held at Ravindra Bharathi, Telugu University and other auditoriums.
Over 900 Telugu poets would participate in a Kavi Sammelan during the conference. Apart from poetry recitals, there would be musical concerts and some big names from the film industry are likely to participate.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has instructed the district collectors to provide free travel and food facility to the Telugu Pandits, teachers, and members of the literary organisations and literature lovers who would be attending the WTC from various districts of the state. The government has sanctioned Rs 50 crore for the event.
Earlier, the chief minister had ordered that Telugu language would be made compulsory subject from 1st to 12th standard in all educational institutions in the state. He also instructed that all private and public institutions must display their organisations name in Telugu on signboards.
