KORAPUT: With ignited young minds playing a decisive role more than ever before, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee foresees a stronger India in the globalised economy. Addressing the convocation of the Central University at Sunabeda on Sunday, Pranab said there is need for more skilled youth in nation-building. The Minister said the country’s increasing working age population would be suitably utilised if the youth were educated.Stating that 672 million of India’s population is in the age group between 15 and 59 years who are treated as working population, Pranab said, “If our youth are imbibed with education and relevant skills, the country would immensely benefit.” Right to Education (RTE) would contribute to the realisation of the advantages of this demographic dividend, Pranab said.Praising the achievements of the CUO in a short span of two years, he said, “in comparison to other central universities which were launched at the time of the launching of the CUO, the CUO is far ahead both in academic activities and infrastructure facilities available.”This university can be instrumental in providing quality higher education to youth of the region. “Koraput is still considered as one of the most underdeveloped regions,” he pointed out. With the university launching a centre for tribal welfare and community development as a key programme, the youth in the district could now realise their dreams, he said.Pranab also shared the concern of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik that there was a need for skilled manpower in the State which is on a growth path. Speaking on the occasion, Governor M C Bhandare urged the youth to take care of school dropouts. With the spread of literacy, poverty could be pushed to the backseat, he asserted. Surabhi Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the mission of the university to give a direction to the youth of the region.
