In Uttara Kannada district, environmental consciousness is widespread. But despite this prevalent awareness, plastic pollution remains a significant issue in this tourism-heavy area. Widespread littering of plastic packets and products is one of the main reasons for plastic pollution. Previously, the administration in Karwar imposed fines on litterers as part of efforts to create a plastic-free environment. Similarly, in Kumta and Sirsi, local authorities have taken steps to enhance recycling practices and infrastructure. Notably, Dhananjay Hegde and Dattatreya Bhatt of Kumta have introduced an innovative solution to tackle the plastic problem in the Uttara Kannada district.
In 2021, Dhananjay Hegde from Karwar and Dattatreya Bhat from Kumta collaborated to develop waterproof paper bags as a sustainable alternative to plastic bags. The concept was initially proposed by Dhananjay Hegde, who serves as an officer in the Industries Department. Supported by 50-year-old Dattatreya Bhat, they worked together to actualize the idea. Dattatreya Bhat designed and built a machine according to Dhananjay Hegde’s specifications. This machine can transform waste materials into reusable bags, contributing to their efforts to reduce plastic usage.
Initially, a sheet of paper is placed onto the machine, and corn glue is applied to it. As the machine operates, the excess material is trimmed away, enhancing the paper’s tensile strength and creating a bag stronger than cardboard. This process results in the production of one bag per minute. Remarkably, even a small-sized bag from this machine can support 4-5 kilograms of weight.
This innovation has the potential to ignite a new environmental revolution by significantly reducing plastic usage. The concept of transforming household waste into durable bags could catalyse home-based industries. Individuals can manufacture and sell paper bags using this machine, thereby promoting sustainability and creating economic opportunities. Such a straightforward tool could greatly benefit the environment. For further details, please contact +91 99458 01301.
