DHENKANAL: Despite the recent spurt in maternal deaths at Dhenkanal, allegedly due to medical negligence, the district administration is yet to launch a probe or take action against the errant doctors. The death of Jita Sahoo of Gujrang village on Thursday is a glowing example. Sahoo died at the District Headquarters Hospital here after giving birth to a girl. Soon after delivery, Sahoo developed convulsion and her feet swelled. High blood pressure was also reported. Dr SC Rath, a senior specialist attending on Sahoo, said she had low haemoglobin levels. While ASHA activists and locals alleged medical negligence, the doctors attributed her death to preeclampsia. Violence broke out on the campus following her death and police had to be deployed to bring the situation under control. Similar treatment was meted out to Satyaprabha Mishra and Chinmayee Diyani. While Mishra succumbed to post-partem haemorrage on her way to hospital, an anaemic Diyani allegedly died of delay in blood transfusion at the District Headquarters Hospital on May 22. Meanwhile, State Women Commission Chairman Jyoti Panigrahi visited the hospital on Saturday and discussed the issue of maternal deaths with patients and hospital staff. “I got to know about the deaths on Friday. The patients complained about their plight before the doctors,” she said, criticising the hospital administration for the callous handling of pregnant women. Chief District Medical Officer BC Behera attributed the situation to lack of coordination between ANM staff, anganwadi workers and ASHA members.
