CHENNAI: With the syllabus and examinations made common among the State, Anglo Indian, Oriental and Matriculation boards in Tamil Nadu, there is widespread talk that the four bodies will be merged and schools asked to remove their respective tags. When asked about how they would react to such a situation, members of the Tamil Nadu Nursery and Primary Matriculation School’s Association told Express that they oppose the move.“Matriculation schools operate under an exclusive Board of Matriculation Schools, and it should remain that way. Also, the current USE system only has a common syllabus and exam, and does not require us to give up our identity as Matriculation schools. If it does, as last resort, we could still identify ourselves as English medium schools, as private schools in Karnataka do,” said K R Nandhakumar, general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary, Matriculation and Higher Secondary Schools’ Association. The Association demanded the formation of a tripartite committee, involving parents, educationists and government officials, to regulate the fee structure for private schools. A fee structure of upto Rs 10,000 till class V, Rs 15,000 till class VIII, Rs 20,000 upto X and upto Rs 25,000 for senior secondary was proposed. A request was also made for the government to supply its Tamil textbooks free of cost to all private school students as the books were not available elsewhere in the market.
