CHENNAI: Marking the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, popularly known as the Lady with the Lamp, International Nurses’ Day was celebrated in the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University with doctors, nurses and teachers being rewarded for exemplary work. Lifetime achievement awards were presented to 27 nurses, 13 doctors from outside Chennai and 16 doctors from the city. Thirty five best nurse awards, 31 best teacher awards and 19 best doctor awards were presented.Addressing the gathering, former governor of Odisha M M Rajendran said that nurses should strive to continue what Florence Nightingale started many years ago – bring credibility and a sense of pride to nursing. “Maintaining the highest quality of nursing care is what you must aim at. The nutritional status of children is of the utmost importance as they have to be well nourished to grow and develop to their fullest capacity.”Quoting this year’s national statistics on child malnutrition, he said,“They show that 45 to 46 per cent of children are malnourished. This is higher than in Bangladesh and even some of the poorer countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Nurses play a major role in the development of the health of the nation. The National Rural Health Mission envisageslofty ideals, and if we can achieve those goals, we can do tremendous service for the country.”Others present included students of various nursing colleges and theirprincipals, Vice-Chancellor of MGR Medical University Dr Mayilvahanan Natarajan and former Dean of Stanley Medical College, Prof S K Rajan.
