New Delhi: Iran's election council, Guardian Council, has rejected claims of voting irregularities, according to reports on the state run television. However the election council reportedly agreed to rigging in the urban areas.
Iran's election council has admitted to irregularities in 3 million votes polled in the country's Presidential elections. The council reportedly agreed that the number of votes cast in 50 cities exceeded the actual number of voters. Even so authorities no violation of law as the council members said the result in these cities "did not noticeably affect the outcome of the elections".
According to the state run television in Iran, the council was not clear on whether they would decisively change the election result.
This action was prompted after defeated presidential candidate Mir Hussein Moussavi alleged irregularities in the presidential elections last week which were won by incumbent President Mahmud Ahmedinejad. Moussavi's vote bank is mainly in the urban areas.
Meanwhile crackdown on the press continues. On Sunday at least 25 journalists and bloggers were arrested. It followed country's supreme leader Ayatollah Khameini stern warning to protestors and media persons covering the protests to not come out on the streets.
A shocking 40-second video of a young woman being killed by the police has emerged on networking websites, offering a glimpse of what's going on in Tehran.
The girl's name was Neda - which ironically means voice - and she was demonstrating in a peaceful rally alongside her father. Iran has not allowed any official reporting or images of the ongoing protests and violence, so Iranian protestors have used youtube, Twitter and other online tools to pass on their messages to the world.
