London: With changing time, the James Bond franchise might undergo a change. While British actor Daniel Craig, 47, is back with the fourth installment of James Bond series with his upcoming presentation ‘Spectre’, the buzz is growing stronger that the next James Bond could be a gay, a black actor or a woman playing the stylish spy 007.
Daniel Craig while promoting the movie recently gave out the message that he has lost the desire to play James Bond in yet another installment. “I would rather slash my wrist, than play the Bond,” he joked in an interview recently. But, the actor is game to see a lady Bond, not a Bond girl, mind you but a lead actress playing the spy. In a recent interview, he confirmed that James Bond is a misogynist but he wouldn’t mind seeing a woman in the lead role. “Jasmine Bond,” suggested Daniel Craig, in a lighter vein.
The name of Idris Elba, noted English actor known for the movie ‘Legacy’, is floating as one hears stories that the next Bond will be a black actor. Former 007 Pierce Borsnan is all for a black actor as new James Bond. The studios and the producer Barbara Broccoli may not be open to the idea, he suggested. Brosnan is kicked with the idea of having Elba as the new bond and suggested that the script needs a new protagonist with changing time. Daniel Craig, too, points that the skin colour of the protagonist doesn’t matter as long as the actor is delivering. “The right person for the job should do the job and I don’t give a f**k what colour his skin is,” Craig famously said in an interview, recently.
While the world is divided over the LGBT rights, the buzz is strong that James Bond franchise might bring the issue into prominence. A gay James Bond could be a far-fetched idea, but, the former leading stars who played 007 confirm that the distant dream can come alive in future depending on the acceptance among the audience. In ‘Spectre’, James Bond played by Craig, is likely to face LGBT adversaries. According to the latest news revealed by Vulture magazine, Bond will fight a lesbian villain.
There was a resistance when Daniel Craig with golden hair was cast in the role of Bond, back in 2005. As perceived by Ian Fleming in his book ‘James Bond’, the spy has black hair, and thus there was an outcry that the world would not accept the Bond with blonde hair.
Since the world is ready to accept changes (albeit after some resistance), one might see all kind of changes in James Bond. He could be a black or a vegan or of a different sexual orientation. It boils down to the extent to which the studio is willing to break the stereotypes associated with Bond.
