CHENNAI: The Indian School of Business (ISB) completed a decade of executive education this year and held a panel discussion with corporate leaders to mark the anniversary. Titled ‘Fostering Innovation in the Next Decade’, the panel comprised newly elected CII President, B Muthuraman, who is also the Vice-Chairman of Tata Steel, Lakshmi Narayanan, co-founder of Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), and Vellayan Subbiah, the Managing Director of Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company.During the two-hour long panel discussion, the trio extolled the various necessities that any ‘relevant’ company would have to provide to its employees to foster the spark of innovation. Muthuraman observed that any means of innovation in an industrial context would be close to impossible without the support of the government and allied bodies. He said lightly, “Though we (Tata Steel) are a century-old company, we have an active experience of two decades.” This set the major difference between India and the US, opined software giant Lakshmi Narayanan.“Silicon Valley is what it is because the government gave them that support,” he said, and added, “And that is why they remain unmatched.”
