New Delhi: On the eve of Raksha Bandhan, the festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, President Pratibha Patil greeted the nation.
"On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, I extend my warm greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens," Patil said in her message on Monday.
“This festival is uniquely symbolic of the bonds of love, affection and mutual trust, which have existed for centuries between sisters and brothers of every community in our country,” she said.
"May their united endeavours bring prosperity and progress to all sections of our people," the president said.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also announced free rides on public buses for women in the capital on Tuesday.
"Women in Delhi would be able to travel free of cost in DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) buses on Raksha Bandhan day. The decision has been taken to ensure that women can easily reach their brothers’ places," said Dikshit.
She said women will be allowed to ride free in all ordinary DTC buses and the green low-floor buses till 5 pm on Tuesday.
Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond of love between brothers and sisters. On the occasion, a sister ties a rakhi (decorative thread) on her brother’s wrist and in turn he gives her gifts and vows to protect her.
