V C Shukla, a former union minister and Congress veteran from Chhattisgarh, died on Tuesday in a Gurgaon hospital after battling injuries sustained in a deadly naxal attack on a convoy of party leaders a fortnight ago.
Shukla (84) died at 14:38 hours, said Yatin Mehta, Chairman of Institute of Critical Care and Anaesthesiology in the Medanta Medicity Hospital in nearby Gurgaon. Though Shukla had shown marginal improvement during treatment, his condition had deteriorated following an infection.
"Shukla developed multi-organ failure. Severe bullet injury and old age were major risk factors in his case," Mehta said.
Shukla had sustained three bullet wounds after he was caught in the middle of an ambush by Maoists on a Congress convoy in Bastar on May 25. Prior to being moved to Gurgaon, Shukla had undergone an operation at a Jagdalpur hospital for removal of the bullets.
Heavily-armed Maoists had ambushed a convoy of Congress leaders in Bastar district, killing 27 people including PCC chief Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, Congress leader Mahendra Karma and ex-MLA Uday Mudliyar and injuring 31 others.
