Japanese encephalitis toll rises to 47

Kolkata: A Birbhum resident has died of Japanese encephalitis at a city hospital, West Bengal Heath Department official confirmed on Thursday.

Rafikul Rehman, a resident of Murarai of Birbhum's Rampurhat, died at the Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday, taking the death toll from Japanese encephalitis in the state to 47.

The 47 victims included three from south Bengal and 44 from seven districts in the northern part, West Bengal Health Services Director Biswaranjan Satpathy told PTI on Thursday.

"The person who died at the NRS hospital yesterday had tested positive for JE virus," he said.

Rehman had been suffering from high fever for last couple of weeks and was admitted to the NRS after a local facility failed to treat him, hospital sources said.

"Rehman was recovering well at the NRS but on Wednesday his condition deteriorated and he died... today we got his blood test report which suggest that his was a JE positive case," Satpathy said.

Since January, 249 JE cases have been reported among which 231 were from the seven districts of north Bengal, he said adding that in the last 24 hours, two Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases were reported from Nadia and South 24

Parganas.
