Mendhar (J&K): The relatives of an Indian Army soldier, detained by police for alleged links with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), defended their ward and appealed to the Government to make a thorough enquiry.
The police detained the two army men, M Shakeel and Abdul Haque on Wednesday, who allegedly helped militants in transporting weapons and in obtaining SIM cards for their mobile phones.
Shakeel's mother Mumtaz believes her son is innocent but says if he is guilty, he should be punished.
"All should be punished if they are indeed involved. However, I do not think Shakeel is involved in it" she said.
Shakeel's uncle who is a retired serviceman, Sher Muhammad echoed similar thoughts.
"I would like to say that if anything objectionable is recovered from them, then they should be punished and tried in keeping with the Indian law," he said.
The soldiers, picked up by Military Intelligence last week, are being interrogated for their alleged links with the terrorist outfit.
The two soldiers had served in counter-insurgency operations with the Army in Kulgam area of south Kashmir and had developed links with rebel leaders.
India's National Security Advisor, M K Narayanan had warned top bureaucrats of states about possible terrorist infiltration into the armed forces.
LeT is one of the dozen terror outfits fighting the Indian rule in Kashmir.
Indian intelligence agencies believe LeT (which is believed to be based in Pakistan) was behind the serial blasts in Mumbai on July 11 that killed over 200 and wounded over 700 people.
Islamabad however, has rejected the charges as unsubstantiated and offered New Delhi help in the investigations, which New Delhi has turned down.
