THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government will speed up steps to provide jobs to the eligible among dependents of military personnel who died in harness or were wounded, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told a Civil-Military Liaison Conference (CMLC) here on Monday. The government has provided jobs to 33 individuals in their capacity as dependents of military personnel. The government will also consider increasing grants and benefits provided to military personnel in the state, he said. ‘’We’ve already increased the monthly pension given to World War II veterans from Rs 600 to Rs 1000,’’ he said. He lauded the prompt response made by the Army, Air Force and the Navy in times of crises. ‘’In times of emergencies such as disasters, natural calamities and the threat from terrorists, the State Government will be able to function only with the co-operation of the Army,’’ he said, offering all support from the part of the State Government to the initiatives of the armed forces in the state. The Chief Minister said that the CMLC would be made an annual programme and the next one would be held in July 2012. Lieutenant General A K Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Army Command, voiced concern over the threat of Naxalism despite improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the NorthEast. He assured the State Government that the Army would provide all assistance in case of emergencies and natural disasters. Major Generals Y Chacko Tharakan, K Surendranath, N S Jamwal and A K Pradhan and Pangode Military Station Commander Brigadier Pradeep Narayanan, DGP Jacob Punnoose, representatives of the Navy, Air Force and the Coast Guard, heads of various government departments also attended.
