Bangalore: In a fight between the Centre and State- the medical seat aspiring students of Karnataka are facing the fire. As per the apex court’s decision, NEET was conducted last year in English and this year it will be held in nine languages – English, Tamil, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. But for Karnataka students it’s a disadvantage as Kannada is not listed as a medium of language. Karnataka which has the highest number of medical colleges and seats (50 and 7,095, respectively) will lose out on their own students this year too.

Karnataka’s Medical Education Minister, Sharanprakash Patil said “We had a video conference with the centre officials last week and we stated that NEET has to be conducted in Kannada too, we have also written a letter to them. Exams are 5 months ahead, what’s stopping them to change the regulations; they cannot blame the state for this.”

According to reports, one of the condition is that for the last three years the a state should have conducted its medical entrance exam in the regional language – However Karnataka has failed in this clause, as the state's Common Entrance Test was conducted only in English.

Union Minister Sadananda Gowda said “For any regional language to be included in the national level exam, it is the duty of the state government to make sure that it happens. The State government has been very lazy in terms of moving the necessary requisition paper and files. I have spoken to the Union Health Minister during the cabinet meet and he has assured me that the Centre will look into this aspect.”

The Aam Aadmi party's Karnataka Unit has already started a petition on Change.org asking the centre to include Kannada. They are also planning to protest in the coming days and would ask the state to boycott this years NEET exam.
