Indians are making significant strides in the leadership of the world’s top IT and tech companies. From Google to Microsoft, names like Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, Shantanu Narayen, Neal Mohan, and many others are prominent in these global organisations. Another notable addition to this list is Prabhakar Raghavan, who was recently appointed as Google’s Chief Technologist.
Prabhakar Raghavan previously served as the Senior Vice President at Google, where he oversaw critical areas including Google Search, Assistant, Geo, Ads, Commerce, and Payments. He has become a key figure within the company, owing to his vast experience in technology and leadership roles.
Raghavan graduated with a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a distinguished member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Additionally, he has held positions as a consulting professor at Stanford University and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the ACM. In 2009, the University of Bologna awarded him a Laurea honoris causa.
Before joining Google, Raghavan was a key leader at Yahoo, where he established and managed Yahoo Labs. He also previously worked as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Verity and spent 14 years at IBM, specialising in algorithms, data mining, and machine learning.
Reportedly, while serving as Senior Vice President at Google, Raghavan earned an annual salary of Rs 300 crore. However, his current salary after being appointed as Chief Technologist has not yet been disclosed.
Raghavan is widely regarded as an expert in search and algorithms. He has authored over 100 academic papers and co-authored two highly regarded graduate textbooks: *Randomised Algorithms* and *Introduction to Information Retrieval*. He also holds 20 patents, including innovations in link analysis and web search.
In his role at Google, Prabhakar Raghavan has been responsible for significant contributions, such as bringing AI-powered services like Smart Reply and Smart Compose to market. He also plays a key role in expanding the reach of Gmail and Google Drive, helping to increase their active user base.
