PUDUCHERRY: Congress MP P Kannan, who had earlier called for a strike over the spiralling rate of crime in the UT, on Sunday called it off following a meeting with Chief Minister Rangasamy. During Sunday’s meeting, Kannan took up various issues with the CM, including the implementation of the Goondas Act, immediate distribution of cyclone relief to farmers and fishermen, construction of concrete houses for hut-dwellers and unemployment. The senior Congress leader said he dropped his proposed agitation as he has “immense faith” in the CM, who had assured him that steps would immediately be taken to address the issues raised by him. Speaking to journalists following his hour-long meeting with Rangasamy, Kannan said the CM gave him a “patient hearing.” This is Kannan’s first meeting with Rangasamy after he took over as Chief Minister.According to the MP, Rangasamy gave an assurance that the cyclone relief amount meant for fishermen would be disbursed in a day or two. On the Goondas Act, the CM said he was not against it and was “considering implementing the Act” in the UT. Recently, Kannan warned of an agitation seeking the implementation of the Act, “in a week’s time”, to check the spiralling rate of crime in the region.Kannan, who had sought an appointment with the CM about 10 days ago, was accorded an “auspicious time” for the purpose on Sunday. During the initial stages of the meeting, he was accompanied by Congress MLA Lakshminarayanan. Though, Welfare Minister P Rajavelu and All India Namathu Rajyam Congress (AINRC) leader Bhalan were also present, Kannan was later closeted with Rangasamy.Queried on whether he advised the CM on any of the issues, he responded that he was neither a teacher nor was Rangasamy a student. “We discussed issues of people,” he added. In response to a poser on whether the CM sought his support to approach the Centre on issues faced by the UT, he said, “the CM wanted me, Union Minister V Narayansamy and other political leaders to work united for the state.”
