Bengaluru: Tragedy struck a poor family in Tumakuru on Monday when not only did they lose their daughter, but had to go through the ignominy of carrying her dead body in a two-wheeler as no ambulance was available at the government hospital.
Rathnamma, daughter of a daily-wage labourer Thimmappa, was suffering from severe fever and breathing problem. The family admitted her to a private hospital in Kodigenahalli in Madhugiri taluk, Tumakuru district.
Later, she was rushed to a government hospital where the 20-year-old Rathnamma was declared brought dead.
As the government hospital lacked an ambulance, many suggested Thimmappa to hire a taxi to take her body back to the village. But the family could not do so as they didn't have enough money. They were forced to carry her body to their native village in a two wheeler.
Distance between Bengaluruu and Tumkur is around 68 kms. Tumakuru is also the home town of Karnataka's Home minister G Parameshwara.
This incident has an eerie similarity to the one that happened last year in Odisha, where a tribal man had to walk around 10 km carrying his wife's body on his shoulder as he failed to get a vehicle to transport it from a government hospital in Kalahandi.
