KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday issued urgent notices to the State Government, Kerala State Farmers Debt Relief Commission, Wayanad District Collector and Agriculture Department secretary on a petition seeking a directive to the Central and State Government to take immediate steps to prevent farmers’ suicide in the state.A Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice P R Ramachandra Menon issued the notices on a petition filed by Advocate Basil Attipetty.Citing various rulings of the Apex Court, the petition states that the state is duty bound to protect, preserve and guard the lives of the farmers. The petitioner submitted that during the last 10 years, the number of farmer suicides in Kerala crossed 2,56,000. Yet, the state government did not take any steps to prevent such further incidents.The petitioner submitted that only a directive to the state would awaken it from its deep slumber and prevent further tragic incidents of farmers’ suicide.
