Khirki extension murder, result of gang-war: Police
Two of Iqbal's associates, who were present at the spot on Sunday, told the police that it was one Babli, who is the leader of a gang based in southeast Delhi's Madangir area, and his associate Golu, who carried out the killing, said the official.

New Delhi: The shoot out at south Delhi's Khirki extension area has turned out to be part of a longstanding gang-war, even as police have not yet been able to track down the two prime suspects.

The man who was allegedly shot dead in Sunday's incident, identified as Iqbal, was a history-sheeter himself and allegedly had links with Deepak Pandit, the prime accused in the killing of alleged gangster Raju Ramakant Rao in south Delhi's GK-I area, which took place in August this year, said a police official on Monday.

Two of Iqbal's associates, who were present at the spot on Sunday, told the police that it was one Babli, who is the leader of a gang based in southeast Delhi's Madangir area, and his associate Golu, who carried out the killing, said the official.

The police have now roped in south Delhi's Special Task Force to probe the matter, even as separate police teams of the district search for the potential hideouts of Babli in Delhi and certain locations in UP and Haryana.

Further investigation revealed Babli's links with gangster Raju Gangwal whose position was taken over by Ramakant Rao after the former's arrest, said the official.

"A case of murder has been registered and efforts are being done to track the suspects," said DCP (South) Prem Nath. The series of killings, believed to be linked with the longstanding rivalries between gangs in southeast Delhi, came to light in 2015 with the alleged murder of a man in south Delhi's Lado Sarai area, which took place in March.

In August, Ramakant Rao -- believed to be the head of Gangwal's gang -- was allegedly eliminated by Deepak Pandit and his associates.

In Sunday's incident, Iqbal, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was shot dead by bike-borne assailants who waylaid Iqbal and his associates near the pavement opposite to the hub of prominent shopping malls in the area.

Passers-by later called up the police and Iqbal was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he was declared brought dead.

Iqbal sustained two bullet injuries. His body was handed over to his relatives after post-mortem examination on Monday, police added.
