BARIPADA: Kaptipada police in Mayurbhanj district on Monday arrested one person on charges of killing a minor girl over previous enmity. Shankar Kumar Naik (18) of Podadiha village was produced in a court and remanded to judicial custody.The body of the seven-year-old girl, who was initially suspected to have been raped and then murdered, was found under a banyan tree nearly 200 metres away from Podadiha Chhak on Sunday.Mayurbhanj SP Soorya Thankapan said the girl was strangulated to death. She had injury marks on her face, neck, right hand and leg. “Post-mortem report confirmed that she was not raped. The accused throttled the girl with the roots of the banyan tree killing her on the spot,” Thankapan said.The deceased Indumati Paria (7), daughter of Ajay Kumar Paria was a Class I student of Saraswati Shishu Mandir.On the day of incident, she had gone to the local market along with her friend to have snacks. Police said Shankar on the pretext of providing her tiffin had allegedly tried to assault her. The accused, in an inebriated state chased her and strangulated her to death.A couple of days back, Indumati’s grandfather Harish Kumar Paria had beaten up Shankar for allegedly stealing petrol from his bike.“Shankar has confessed to the crime and admitted that he killed her to take revenge. A murder case under Section 302 of IPC has been registered and the accused medically examined. He was produced in Udala court and sent to jail,” the SP added.
