KOCHI: Fed up with the lackadaisical attitude of the Kochi Corporation in repairing the city roads, Kochi Metro Rail Limited has decided to take over the repair works of half a dozen more roads from the civic body. The metro rail authorities informed that the repairing of the half-a-dozen roads in the city, which have already been undertaken by them, would be completed before September 12-the date on which the trial run of the alternative traffic arrangements prior to the North ROB reconstruction is scheduled for. “The trial run will be held on September 12 to 14. We have entrusted Kerala Construction Corporation (KCC) with the road repairing works. They have made all the arrangements for carrying out the work. What we require now is just a few days sunshine,” said Tom Jose, Nodal Officer, Kochi Metro Rail Limited. Veekashanam road, C P Ummer road, Pulleppady-Thammanam road, Kathrukkadavu ROB underpass and Tenth Pius Road were the roads undertaken by Metro Rail Limited earlier. Once the repair works of these roads are completed, the KCC will start the work of the newly undertaken roads. The road leading to Chittoor road from Padma junction on MG road, Azad road, Pipeline road from Karanakodam, Saint Benedict-Paramara road, Rajaji road and Thammanam-Kathrukkadavu road are the roads to be undertaken by the metro rail corporation. “After the completion of the trial run, Metro Rail Limited authorities will study the traffic flow in the city. All our future activities will be based on the trial run. We will be designing the further programmes on the basis of it. Then, we will fix the day for starting the reconstruction of North ROB,”Tom Jose said. “The Kochi Metro authorities will supply various devices to the police for regulating traffic. We will also provide the police with 50 traffic warden. They will be helpful for the police while regulating the traffic through the alternative roads,” he said. The City Police Commissioner have shortlisted the traffic wardens for the purpose. “Jackets, rain coats, electronic and batons will also be given to the police,”he said. “Sign boards will be erected along the city roads. We are planning to complete the erection of the sign boards before the trial run,” he said. On starting the construction of a business district in the PWD land at Kakkanad to raise funds for the Kochi Metro Rail Corporation, he said the plans are still on the anvil. We are yet to prepare a detailed report in this regard,he added.
