BANGALORE: Karnataka High Court on Thursday adjourned the further hearing on the PIL requesting the court to direct the state government not to select the beneficiaries of Suvarna Bhoomi Yojane through lottery, by two weeks after the government advocate sought time to file his reply.
The divison bench consisting of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice H G Ramesh, observed that the state government has informed its decision to treat all those who have less than five acres of land as small farmers and to select 5,000 small farmers from each taluk through lottery to give `10,000 cash to buy seeds and fertilizers under Suvarna Bhoomi Scheme. The small farmers with very less land holdings might be prejudiced and might not be choosen through the lottery though the benefits are intended to them whilst the farmers with relatively bigger land holdings might walk away with the benefits of the scheme. The bench also directed the government not to precipitate the issue till further orders and adjourned the case to June 23.
