CUTTACK: With a history of bad blood behind them, local students of the Ravenshaw University here and their foreign counterparts clashed on the campus yet again on Friday over a trivial issue of vehicle parking. One local student has been injured in the violence.The incident, however, did not go out of hand as was the case in January with the authorities this time managing to broker peace between the bickering groups.Trouble erupted near the main gate parking lot of the University.A group of day- scholars were reportedly sitting near the parking lot for their ‘khatti’ when an Afghan student came and parked his car there. They were reportedly speaking among themselves when the Afghan student took offence to some utterances.There was an altercation between the foreign student and the local ones which soon turned violent. The Afghan student and the locals came to blows.As the news spread, local students began ganging up and protested the action of the foreign students. They even locked the University main gate for some time until students union office bearers persuaded them to relent.As tension prevailed, University authorities called the local students’ group and Afghanis to hammer out a reconciliation.“The local students were talking among themselves which was misunderstood by the Afghani student and that led to the unpleasant situation. The misunderstanding has now been cleared,’’ Registrar Dr Smarapriya Mishra said.In January a clash between the local students and their Afghani counterparts, enrolled in the University under the student exchange programme of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), had made international headlines as the former left the campus in protest. They, however, returned with Government taking responsibility of their security.
