COIMBATORE: Love and sex appear to be the driving factors behind several murders in Tamil Nadu, if one were to go by the Crime In India 2010 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recently. It has emerged that of the 1,875 murders committed in the southern State last year, as many as 237 were motivated by “love affairs and sexual causes.” This is second only to “personal vendetta”, which had led to 316 murders. In contrast, the State had witnessed only 153 murders for gain. Besides only 164 persons were killed over property disputes.“These type of murders (driven by love and lust) are classified as ‘partner violence’ in western countries. But in India this is an emerging trend due to changing social and cultural norms. If you see media reports too, it would show that suspicion over a partner’s infidelity is increasingly becoming the cause for violent attacks. Even in movies, love is the dominant subject,” explains Prof R Thilagaraj, Head, Department of Criminology, University of Madras.Incidentally, the all India data on kidnapping also reveals that 46.8 per cent of the abduction in the country was carried out “to force people into marriages.” In other words, 18,354 out of 39,148 abductions in 2010 were done to force the victim into a marriage. The second most common reason for abductions (3,142) was to force the victims into physical relationship. Love affair going sour was the fourth most common reason driving people to end their lives. In TN, last year 588 persons committed suicide due to failed love affairs. In India, Chennai topped this list for the second consecutive year with 61 residents killing themselves over a failed relationship.
