Mumbai: Ahead of Holi festival, the Maharashtra government is cracking the whip to ensure no water is wasted. The Maharashtra Water Resources Ministry has given strict orders that there should be no wastage of water or any rain dances during Holi celebrations.

The Ministry has also written to all municipalities urging them to not provide water to swimming pools during Holi.

Thane Collector Ashwini Joshi also called upon residents of the district to desist from resorting to 'rain dance' and wastage of water during the festival.

People should realise the gravity of the problem and avoid wasteful water usage, Joshi urged. She asked the housing societies and other organisations to undertake water harvesting and recycling and present such projects before the District Planning Committee.

Despite the fact that there were several rivers and dams in the district's Sahapur taluka, it was facing severe water shortage, she pointed out.
