Once again, Maharashtra recorded over 2,000 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, with 2,696 cases. The state also reported 49 fatalities, according to the health department. Now, the state’s reported Covid-19 caseload stands at 65,56,657 and death toll at 1,39,166. There are 35,955 active cases in the state.
A total of 3,062 patients were discharged from hospitals, pushing the total recoveries to 63,77,954. On Saturday, 1,64,096 samples were tested, taking total coronavirus tests, so far, to 5,90,74,660.
The recovery rate of the state is 97.27 per cent and case fatality 2.12 per cent.
The bulk of the new infections came from Mumbai and Pune divisions. Mumbai city alone reported 408 cases and six deaths on Saturday. The city’s caseload rose to 7,43,816 and death toll to 16,122. The larger Mumbai division reported 890 new cases and 10 deaths. Pune division also reported a high number of cases at 895.
After five deaths in September, Delhi reports first in October
After reporting only five deaths in September, Delhi on Saturday recorded one death and 33 fresh infections with a positivity rate of 0.05 per cent, according to data shared by the health department. This is the first death recorded in October.
Last month, one fatality each was reported on September 7, 16 and 17, and two on September 28, according to official figures. The death toll now stands at 25,088.
The daily case count in Delhi had dropped to 17 on September 13, with no death being recorded, while the positivity rate stood at 0.04 per cent, according to official figures. Despite a drop in daily cases in the last several days, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal recently cautioned that chances of the third wave were quite real, while he asserted that his government was preparing on a “war-footing” to combat it.
Delhi was majorly impacted by a brutal second wave of the pandemic, claiming a massive number of lives and the oxygen supply shortage issue at various hospitals had added to the woes.
The number of cases have shown a downward trend and the positivity rate too has been shrinking in the last several weeks. Delhi health minister Saturdar Jain recently said medical infrastructure was being ramped up and 37,000 beds dedicated for Covid patients were being set up to tackle the anticipated third wave. Few days later, he had said the number of coronavirus cases had also been under control for the past two months.
